Where to Find Your Canner Manual: Presto, NESCO and Ball
Presto's manuals are on its Manuals Finder and on each product page. NESCO's are on its Care & Use Guides page. Find your model number first. Then check that the cover of the file names your model, because makers change these documents. It takes a few minutes, and it is the best-spent time in canning.
The short answer
Find the model number on your machine, then download the manual from the maker: Presto's Manuals Finder, or NESCO's Care & Use Guides page. Check that the cover names your model and note the form number or date. We could not open Ball's own product page, so use the booklet from the box or ask Ball. This site gives no water amounts or times. The manual is where those live.

Most canning questions end up back at one booklet. It is worth having the right one on the counter.
Why does the manual come first?
The manual is the document the maker stands behind for that machine. Sources that disagree on much else still send you there. For the Presto Precise, the sources disagree on recipes.
- Presto's FAQ says tested stovetop recipes work in its digital canner.
- The National Center for Home Food Preservation, through K-State, and Penn State say to follow only the manual. K-State's reason is that the booklet lacks at least two special USDA processes.
- NDSU says to follow the canner's instructions. It says to use tested recipes from the National Center or your state's university extension office (free local food-safety advice).
We do not settle that here. Read your current manual and ask Presto's consumer service. K-State's note dates from 2021. Presto has revised its manuals since, and we have not checked whether that gap still exists.
Where is each manual?
These are the versions we saw on November 2, 2026. They will change, which is why you check.
| Your machine | Where to get it | Version we saw |
|---|---|---|
| Presto Precise 02144, 12-quart digital | Presto manual page for the 02144 | Form REV4008-260C, 2024 |
| Presto Precise 02152, 17-quart digital | Presto manual page for the 02152 | Form REV4120-013A, 2025 |
| Presto Precise 02153, 23-quart digital | Presto manual page for the 02153 | Form 4124-204D, 2026 |
| Presto Precise 02154, 16-quart digital | Presto manual page for the 02154 | Form 4124-204D, 2026, shared with the 02153 |
| Presto 01781 and 01755, stovetop with dial gauge | Presto manual page for the 01781 | Form 72-719M, 2026, one file for both |
| Presto 01784, induction stovetop | Presto manual page for the 01784 | We did not open this one |
| Any other Presto | Presto Manuals Finder, by category or model number | Varies |
| NESCO NPC-9 | NESCO's current NPC-9 guide, linked from its product page | Revision posted October 2026 |
| NESCO stovetop canners and others | NESCO Care & Use Guides | Varies |
| Ball EasyCanner | Booklet from the box, or Ball's customer service | We could not read a copy from the maker |
A snag with NESCO's page. On November 2, 2026, the NPC-9 label on its download page led to a file with a different model number on the cover, DPC-9SS. The NPC-9 product page led to a file with NPC-9 on the cover. NESCO may fix this at any time. It shows why you check the cover.
About Ball. Ball's own product page refused our request. The Ball catalog page we could read links no manual. Search results show copies on third-party manual sites. We did not check those against Ball, so compare the model number on your machine. Our EasyCanner page covers what the machine is and is not for.
How do I find my manual?
Find the model number
Look on the machine itself. On Presto digital canners, the 2022 manual places it on the back of the canner body. A stock number from your order or the box also helps.Go to the maker first
Start with the links above, before any third-party PDF site. Presto says its manuals are downloadable PDF files.Check the cover
Make sure the cover names your model. Write the form number or date on the first page, so you can spot a newer version later.Read it once before you need it
Read the safeguards and the method you plan to use. Presto and NESCO both suggest a practice run with water in the jars, and Presto says to do it before first use.Ask the maker when something is missing
Contact consumer service with your model number. Presto's is at 1-800-877-0441, and its manual finder page says it is staffed on weekdays. NESCO's is at 1-800-288-4545.
Can the same model have different manuals?
Yes. Presto's 12-quart digital canner, stock number 02144, has at least two manuals we could compare. One is Form 4008-229C from 2022. The other is Form REV4008-260C from 2024.
| What changed | 2022 form | 2024 form |
|---|---|---|
| Wide-mouth quart jars under pressure | 4 | 5, which also matches Presto's 2025 FAQ |
| Where the sealing ring goes | In a frame attached to the cover | In an assembly set on the rim of the pot |
| Temperature sensor arm while jars warm | Lowered and latched | Left upright and unlocked |
| How old a canning source can be before Presto warns you | Published before 1994 | Published before 2015 |
Presto does not explain these changes in what we read. We cannot tell you which units each form fits. Follow the manual that came with your machine, or the one that matches its model and series. Ask Presto if you have an older unit and a newer booklet.
What can a manual not tell me?
A manual tells you how the maker says the machine works. It is not outside proof that a process gets your jars hot enough. Nobody outside the company has published test results for Presto Precise canners. The sources on plug-in canner safety differ.
NESCO's guide sends you to the USDA Complete Guide for recipes. The National Center for Home Food Preservation says it does not support USDA canning steps in electric multi-cookers. Penn State Extension says it cannot recommend combination canner and cooker appliances, because research on their safety is missing. Penn State names no brand. Putting the NPC-9 in that group is our reading. Details are on our NESCO page.
What should I read next?
Once you have your manual, how to use a plug-in pressure canner and how to use a stovetop pressure canner show what to look for in it. If a Presto Precise shows a code, go to Presto error codes.
Still choosing a machine? The stovetop canner guide and the site overview are good next stops. Our list of tested recipe sources covers what the manual does not. The Presto Precise page has the digital family in one place.
What people ask
How much water do I put in my NESCO or Presto canner?
Your manual gives the amount. This site gives no water amounts on purpose. The steps differ by machine and by method. Open the pressure canning section of the manual for your exact model. Call the maker's consumer service if a step looks unclear.
Where is the manual for the Presto 23-quart pressure canner?
It depends on which one you own. The stovetop 01781 shares a manual with the 16-quart 01755. The digital 02153 shares one with the 16-quart digital 02154. Both are linked in our table. Presto's Manuals Finder covers the rest. The model number on your canner tells you which applies.
Can I use a manual from a third-party PDF site?
It may be an older version, and you may not be able to tell. Presto's own 12-quart digital manual changed between 2022 and 2024, including steps and a jar count. Start with the maker. If you use another copy, compare its form number or date with what the maker lists now.
My canner is old and I can't find its manual. What now?
Call the maker with the model number. Presto's consumer service is at 1-800-877-0441 and NESCO's at 1-800-288-4545. Be careful with old printed recipes. Presto's current manuals warn that canning advice published before 2015 may be wrong. They say recipes handed down or found on the web are often unreliable.
